E-Texts in French Studies


  • More and more, researchers are asking where to search the complete works of a writer, or how to search an entire novel.
  • The increasing number of full-text literary works on the Internet and on CD-ROM's has begun to change the way literary scholars work.
  • Searching across the entire corpus of a writer, the ability to create concordances, the power to discover new correspondences and relationships in and among literary works - these capabilities are opening up new fields of inquiry in literature.
  • Types of E-texts. Issues in using E-Texts

By now, a household word in French studies. Begun as a dictionary project, it has grown to a major research tool, containing nearly 2000 texts from French letters, as well as several other research databases. Among them, the Encyclopédie Électronique, the Opera del Vocabolario Italiano, and the Textes de Français Ancien (TFA) database.

ABU: la Bibliothèque Universelle
A site of 295 texts, 94 authors, that allows searching across an entire work. Public domain texts contributed by members of the Association des Bibliophiles Universels. 

Athena
Literature is only one of the sections of this site, but a huge one. The category "Textes d'auteurs d'expression française" is a long list of links to full-text French works. The section on "Books" contains texts of other European writers as well.

Gallica
A project of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Boasting 80,000 digitized texts, with an intuitive search engine, this mammoth project of the BNF includes documents of all kinds, not only literary texts. Texts are arranged chronologically and by themes. Also included are many reference works, including the classic French dictionaries and encyclopedias, and a section of images.

Many of the links to texts go to Gallica or Athena (see above), but there are more obscure texts here from other sites.

Vie de Henry Brulard: a digital version of Stendghal's manuscript; easily browsed (page images can be enlarged) aor searched.

WESS Electronic Text Collections in Western European Literature.
Organized by language, and maintained by a librarian, this list has links to texts in all the major European languages, including Provençal, Old Norse, Galician, and Catalan. Most are freely accessible.

The Renaissance in print: 16th century French books in the Douglas Gordon collection.
The approximately 600 Gordon books dating from the sixteenth century include literary works and titles pertaining to religion, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, travel and architecture. Completely digitized, from bindings to endpapers, and everything in between.

French Language Resources: electronic text center (UVA)
The University of Virginia's famous Electronic Text Center has links to many works of French literature.

Tennessee's Bob's Famous French Links
It takes a little more digging here, but there are links to e-texts.

A "dynamic reference work", maintained and updated by an editorial board. Over 950 professional philosophers are donating their time and labor to collaboratively write, referee, and maintain the reference work.

Digital Scriptorium
An image database of medieval and renaissance manuscripts, intended to unite scattered resources from many institutions into an international tool for teaching and scholarly research.

Project Gutenberg
The granddaddy of electronic texts on the Internet. Many language and literatures are to be found among the mostly English texts, including some of the more obscure European texts.

OAIster:
A searchable catalog of publicly available digital library resources provided by the research library community. Broad subject coverage.


IntraText Digital Library
A large international archive of e-texts. Many languages and literatures.
