JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY
ARTS INNOVATION GRANTS

Faculty grants

The Arts Innovation Program is designed to help Homewood faculty develop interdisciplinary (cross-departmental, cross-divisional, or cross-institutional) undergraduate courses that create new educational opportunities in the arts for Homewood students.  Priority will be given to those courses that include two divisions of the University, or one division and a community partner.  While the Arts Innovation grants provide funding for courses that could not otherwise be offered, the authorization to offer a course must come, as always, from the appropriate academic unit.

Grant proposals will be reviewed twice during each academic year: in October for courses that would be offered the following inter-session, spring semester, or fall; and in March for courses that would be offered the following summer, fall or intersession.

Grant proposals may request up to $8,000 in funding.  Proposals should be no more than three pages in length and should include the following:

Course Description: Title and summary of course content including proposed readings, required materials and grading criteria, as well as the  departments/divisions that will list the course.

Faculty: Departmental/divisional affiliation of faculty and any staff or community partner who will help teach the proposed course, and relevant areas of expertise.

Dates to be offered:  Spring 08; Fall 08; Intersession 09; and Spring 09

Relevance: How will the proposed course strengthen arts/cultural opportunities for undergraduates?

Instructional expenses: Applicants should submit funding requests or rationale for how the proposed course will affect their course load or other responsibilities and their departmental/divisional resources.

Student grants

The Arts Innovation Program is designed to help Homewood undergraduates create new co-curricular activities or to significantly increase the impact of already-existing co-curricular activities in the arts within both the University and Baltimore communities. [Please note that the Digital Media Center offers grants for projects demonstrating “a new and creative use of technology .”  Full-time students in the Krieger and Whiting Schools are eligible to apply for these grants at http://digitalmedia.jhu.edu]

Grant proposals will be reviewed twice each year:  In October for projects that will begin during the spring semester; and in March for projects that will begin the during the summer or fall semester.  Note that in March students may also apply for funding for a summer internship in partnership with a Baltimore arts institution.

Grant proposals may request up to $2,000 in funding.  Proposals should be no more than four pages in length including one page specifying in complete detail the budget and proposed allocation of the funds requested. All grant proposals should be accompanied by a letter from a faculty or staff sponsor who is familiar with the student(s) making the proposal. Grant proposals should include the following:

Project Description: Summary of proposed project.

Relevance: How will the proposed project strengthen art/cultural opportunities for undergraduates?

Background: What prior experiences have the student or students making the proposal had that makes them likely to be successful?

Expenses:  Applicants should submit a detailed budget to support their funding request.

For students applying for a summer internship in partnership with a Baltimore arts institution, the project description should include a letter of support from the sponsoring institution.
